The preferred form of the work for making modifications to it.

If the person distributing the recorded performance as software --
i.e. digitised information -- licenses the work under a free license,
and later wants to make modifications to the work, what is their
preferred software form of that work to do so? The answer to that is
the answer to your question.

Presumably the digitised form of the recording is as close as that
person can get; therefore, that's the source.
