I think you missed the point that the discussed changes are derived.
If the changes were a totally stand-alone addition, then your
claim would be true. However, m.k.edwards says they are derived,
so it's not. When changes are derived from GPL material,
the author(s) of the GPL'd work also have copyright interest
in the changes and their licensing terms should be respected too.
