Both are correct, actually, and are in origin, quite different forms.

"Mark objected to him taking the cat."
"Mark objected to his taking the cat."

Are both correct.  The second is stilted, and generally would be "Mark
objected to his taking of the cat."  That difference is irrelevent in
the sentence you're asking about, since the relevant clause doesn't
have a direct object.
