License for fortunes?

Hello,

I was wondering if I could consider fortunes to be in public domain, or if I
have to have an exact permission from the person that collected them. The
problem is that I got a database of atheist fortunes from Wayne Aiken's site
(http://www4.ncsu.edu/~aiken/), but there is no explicit copyright for those. I
believe that, since the quotes are either anonymous or widely-used quotes from
celebrities or dead presidents, the thing is legally public domain, but I'd
like to hear your opinion before ITP'ing.

[ if you're reading this in -legal, please Cc: to me ]

Thanks, Carlos
