You may want to add more information to your post. Are you running 'X'
with a desktop, and if so, which one?
When you open the lid, is the computer still powered on? Are any
indicator lights still on?
Many desktop's (kde, gnome) have settings for lid events that will allow
the system to ignore when the lid is opened or closed. I am running
enlightenment desktop and when I use the computer for a media player, I
have it set to ignore lid events so I can close the lid and continue to
watch the media on an external monitor.
As far as coming back from suspension, you may have to look and see if
you are set up to suspend from ram or from a temporary file. There may
be some settings that have to be tweeked or this may be caused by a bug
in your video driver.
