p61 series thinkpad need to bypass lost power-on password.  Bought it at a closing school sale.
Please help by explainiing how to correct or suggesting what motherboard to purchase for replacement.

Fresh install of Debian Stretch 9.  X11 starts in software rendering
mode.  The same laptop with Ubuntu 16.04 runs with hardware rendering.

Any hints on how what is needed for hardware rendering with this
hardware combination in Debian?  I am sure this hardware used to be
fully supported and therefore hardware support must have been dropped
at some point.

Glad to see you fixed it, but a question are you running in DRI3 mode?
I just found my T60p was running only in DRI2 mode and a few simple changes
to xorg.conf enabled DRI3

in device section set DRI3 to True is all it needs.
