What's the output of lsmod? Maybe you need to load module via.

Do you have the xserver-xorg-video-openchrome package installed?
Do you have a custom /etc/X11/xorg.conf? Which driver is loaded? It
would be nice to have a look at the complete output of dmesg and
Xorg.0.log. If it is too big, please provide a link.

according to the release notes, if you were using an ATI card, the proprieatary drivers do not work with some desktop environments, such as Gnome, if I recall correctly, and Gnome requires a 3D capable card to work.  Could something like this be the issue?  

Take a look at the release notes issues [1] or information on how to prepare the upgrade [2], just in case the cause of your problem is stated there
