Re: Network Interfaces "Missing" on Dell Latitude D600

When I pull up the gnome network status panel (I have it pinned to the bar), the only interface listed is the loopback lo. I find this odd as the wireless can correctly detect the available networks in my area, so I have to believe that some part of the networking system is behaving correctly. ifconfig also only lists the loopback. lspci identifies the NIC/WLAN's correctly.
The last few times I've had issues with something showing up in lspci but *not* showing up in the Gnome network manager or iwconfig/ifconfig, it's been because of one of two issues:

1 - The driver isn't being loaded automatically at boot time. This happens with my Atheros 5xxx card. 'lsmod' shows that the "ath5k" driver isn't loaded. 'modprobe ath5k' causes the interface to appear in iwconfig and NetworkManager automatically detected it and connected to my AP. I could probably tinker with the modprobe.d files, but I just added 'ath5k' to /etc/modules and was done with it.

2 - The really tough one to track down was I had a couple of cards that needed firmware loaded at the time the driver loaded... and the firmware isn't included with the kernel. The solution was to install some package... I think it was "debian-fiirmware" or "wireless-firmware" or something. Just search aptitude or synaptic for "firmware" and you'll find it. I was able to install that package, reboot, and everything came up like magic.

Hope this helps...
