You will also need to make sure you have the module-assistant package
installed. Otherwise m-a a-i madwifi wont work. 

The thorough procedure is:

# aptitude install build-essential module-assistant
# m-a update
# m-a a-i madwifi
# modprobe -rv ath_pci && modprobe -v ath_pci
