gnome-volume-manager. Howto debug

Hello everyone,
since some update the gnome-volume-manager does not work anymore.
The question is now how do I debug this ?
I can confirm that hal is working. A tail to syslog shows that hal is
creating the devices.
The session management at gnome also shows that gnome-volume-manager is
set to start at gnome start.
But a pas uax does not show such process. And starting the command which
is configured at gnome-session start, does nothing. No failure, or any
output. Nothing.
Any help would be nice. Also any advice if there is more information needed.
