debian lenny on Acer Extensa 4420-5963

Hello list,

Yesterday I purchased an Acer Extensa 4420-5963 laptop at retail for
USD$400.

The somewhat stale lenny netinst disc I had lying around did not
detect any of the laptop's network hardware, so I could not
proceed. Hoping that a newer build would help, I downloaded a daily
build of lenny netinst. But this would hang upon boot with errors
similar to https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/252041

With the kernel boot options "noapic" and "nolapic", I was able to get
the installer to boot and recognize at least the wired ethernet, and
then successfully installed lenny.

The resulting system hung on boot unless also provided with acpi=off,
but there were warnings about pnpbios stuff. The laptop works fine
after that.

I usually build a kernel package with the latest stable RT (realtime)
patches from kernel.org, because of the multimedia work I do. I also
read somewhere that more recent kernels had helped.

So I built linux-2.6.26.5-rt8 with the make-kpkg tools and installed
that. It works, but still must have "acpi=off" in order to boot
successfully, and still gives pnpbios warnings. See complete dmesg
output at bottom of this email.

ALSA seems to work fine, I'm listening to Ahmad Jamal through the
laptop's speakers.

The SD card slot seems not to work. It detects the SD card, but
nothing else happens; it does not get assigned a /dev/sdX

This is a pretty decent laptop for the price. It's a dual-core athlon
64 with 2gb of ram and a radeon graphics card. I like the keyboard
layout and feel... very "snappy". The rows of keys are slightly
curved, like the Logitech Wave keyboard. I've not yet seen that on a
laptop and I like it. The touchpad is in a good spot, and is blessedly
free of the "scroll bars" that HP likes to put on their touchpads (i
was endlessly triggering these scroll areas with the edge of my palm
as i typed, but the better location of the Acer's touchpad prevents
this from happening altogether.) I also ran it through its paces with
multiple simultaneous internet downloads, a 45Gig rsync job over the
LAN, and simultaneously building GNU Emacs from CVS and the
aforementioned realtime kernel. I think I'll be pretty comfortable
with this as my primary personal machine.

I can't seem to get started with the wireless, the kernel only detects
the wired (only one eth*, see below.)

Thanks so much in advance for any help you can provide.
