You should enter the BIOS and see if you can set the SATA channels to 
some "compatibility mode", opposed to AHCI. Then try again.
If it works, add the backports.org repository and install a newer kernel 
than the standard 2.6.18, and put the SATA channels back to the original.

Otherwise, try one of the modified Etch images from Kenji Muto with a 
newer kernel:
