Debian's sound worked perfectly on my IBM Thinkpad T60, no adjustments necessary.

I have no expereince on advanced sound systems.

I have an Asus M6800N, it's quite old now but works very well with Debian.

You should have a look at http://www.linux-laptop.net/ before buying.
