My SMC2835W works like a charm without ndiswrapper, follow these steps:
1. install Debian (but Ubuntu may work as well)
2. install hotplug and a recent kernel (with CONFIG_PRISM54 = Y or M)
3. download the isl3890 firmware from http://prism54.org/fullmac.html
(or extract it from the driver cd that came with the card) and save it
as '/usr/lib/hotplug/firmware/isl3890' (no file extension)
4. modprobe prism54 (may not be needed)
5. insert card

I understand what u are talking about :) But how can I do step 2? And I
didn't find
/usr/lib/hotplug/firmware path ....
I'll explain step 2 in a little more detail:
a. 'sudo apt-get install udev'
b. 'grep PRISM54 /boot/config-*'
you should see one of these:
'CONFIG_PRISM54=m' -> skip ahead to step 4
'CONFIG_PRISM54=y' -> skip ahead to step 5
'# CONFIG_PRISM54 is not set' -> apt-get install one of these kernels:

as for your second question, it seems like all the kernel packages I
