At least you have the option of connecting an external modem on the
serial port ..

I suppose it's not really convenient when traveling ..

Incidentally .. I've made "some" progress with my own little "situation" ..

.. posted an update for the  debian-user folks to read ..

Just for the record ..

Since it's likely it won't help any w/ your pcmcia modem problem ..

Maybe you could try the Live CD's approach?  See if you can get it to
work with at least one of them and diff the conf files?
