Doesn't look like you really have kernel support for all this.
Check your kernel configuration.
For example, to be on the safe side, check OHCI, UHCI and
EHCI under "device drivers/USB" and lookup lspci -v
with the new kernel later, to get an idea what's actually running
(you may exclude unnecessary stuff with another compile).

Perhaps you should first try to find a working 2.6.17 config for
exactly your Laptop model, and take that as a template.

And ensure you've got udev installed.
