Re: Fw: Xfree configuration

hi guillaume et all,

i finally made it. I m a happy debian user now. Here is how i solved the problem. First of all, i saw that the message i was getting was " Failed to initialize core devices ". So a searched for it in google. I found that someone solved the problem by. 1. running command modprobe mousedev and 2. running the dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86. I gave some input on this program and the result is that i have xserver running.

The window manager is kde and also before doing the above i disabled modules GLcore and dri from /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file and instead of Driver "keyboard" i used "kbd" i dont know if those actions helped in the solution but this is what i ve done.

thank you very much for your time, you really helped me,
dionysis

hi Guillaume,

yes i removed that line and i realised that i had another error. After
fixing this something strange happend. The xserver seemed to start but it
stopped again. I can see the logo of nvidia but nothing more. It stops and
then i get the error message that i have attached. I m sending you this
log file together with the configuration of my XF86Config-4 file.
If it is not much trouble could you recommend me what is the correct
configuration for XF86Config-4 in order to start the xserver?

regards,
dionysis

Hi Guillaume et all,

first of all thank you very much for answering my email. As you said, i
installed the linux headers for my version (its the "2.4.27-2-386").
After that the driver for nvidia was installed successfully!
But i can see that my problem is more complex than that. I thought that
after installing the new drivers i could have the xserver running,
instead of that i get the following message:

hi all,

I have a SONY-VAIO VGN-FS315S laptop with an NVIDIA GeForce 6400
card. I installed on it the latest distribution of Debian but i dont
have any graphical interface because of a problem with Xfree.

i assumed that the problem has to do with the drivers that debian
uses and instead of nv i may need to use nvidia driver. For this
reason i downloaded NVIDIA-Linux-x86-2.0-7182-pkg1.run installer from
NVIDIA in order to install it and fix the problem. But i cannot
install this driver because a file named version.h is missing from
the directory /usr/src/linux/include/linux, according to the error
message i get.

Does anyone have a solution to my problem? Do i need to install the
nvidia driver in order to solve it or is it something else? If the
problem can be fixed simple by using this driver, how can i make the
installer work? Do i need to compile the kernel again? Do i need some
extra packages or headers?

I m new to linux so please give me real simple instructions. Thank
you very much in advance,

dionysis

Hi

You need the kernel headers corresponding to your installed kernel for
the Nvidia driver to compile their driver.

There is a misconfiguration in your config file of xfree !

Maybe you can try to remove the ModeLine lines...
On most screens, Horiz et Vertical frequencies are enough
