I dont know much (anything) about SVGATextMode, but what you are describing 
sounds alot like framebuffer mode/console. Where you can get the console text 
running at high-resolutions with colour backgrounds etc... 

Search google about framebuffer and debian. If you want nice background 
graphics, look for "framebuffer splash" as well
