You might go over to http://www.madwifi.org and check the mailing list
archives.  I have never seen the LED work except in XP on my T42.  I
was provided a couple of commands in an attempt to activate the LED but
they didn't work for me.  I run kwifimanager so I can get a visual
indication of what's going on.
