Works like a charm for me (sony vaio) with the following kernel
options : CONFIG_SND_AC97_CODEC=m
CONFIG_SND_INTEL8X0=m
CONFIG_SND_INTEL8X0M=m

The only tricky thing I had to do was to mute the external amplifier
in alsamixer : run alsamixer, scroll right to the external amplifier
and press 'm'. Other people have reported this to work.
