no volume control

Hi everyone.
I've got a Compaq presario 700 with debian testing on.
Everything used to work pretty well, until a couple of days, when after an update, I'm having some troubles with volume control. The thing is that the sound card is correctly recognized and modules are brought up by hotplug sound card is: 0000:00:07.5 Multimedia audio controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT82C686 AC97 Audio Controller (rev 50) Subsystem: Compaq Computer Corporation SoundMax Digital Integrated Audio Flags: medium devsel, IRQ 5

        I/O ports at 1854 [size=4]
        I/O ports at 1850 [size=4]
Capabilities: [c0] Power Management version 2
modules are ok, as you see below

ac97_codec 16972 1 via82cxxx_audio

howver, volume is set at minimum. I mean, when gnome starts, it starts the sound system and I get the usual sounds. Then, if I try to lift the volume up, I get no response from the buttons on the pc and if I try to start gnome-volume-control I get an error message like
Sorry, no mixer elements and/or devices found.

Does anybody know what's going on?
Thanks a lot for advice
	Alessandro
