I believe it's sarge.  I didn't compile any source code, just ran the
install script from the Kanotix live CD and subsequently ran apt-get
upgrade and dist-upgrade from time to time.  /var/log//XFree86.0.log
says it's XFree86 Version 4.3.0.1 (Debian 4.3.0dfsg.1-12.0.1
20050223080930 joshk@triplehelix.org).

Perhaps I bollixed the /etc/X11/Xsession.d/40xcustom_load-xmodmap file
in some way when I copied and pasted into my text editor.  I'll take a
look and try again (checking both the /etc file and the $HOME file).
