Re: snd-cs4236 and Thinkpad 600E
I have alsa running on my Thinkpad 600E. Note that I am running kernel
version 2.6.8.1 -- if you are running 2.4.x, these may not be exactly
correct, but will be similar. Any 2.6.x series kernels will be very
similar. Also note that I have been having trouble with sound on any
kernel more recent than 2.6.8.1. I rather suspect that there is
something in my config that is screwy, and it probably won't matter to
you. YMMV.
With that said,
1) Make sure that you have the snd-cs4236 driver available.
2) Then make sure that you have the following lines in
your /etc/modprobe.d/alsa file:

# Make sure that it knows how to configure it. This is the default
# configuration. This may need to be changed. Also, this is really

3) Finally, run /sbin/update-modules
