A small thing... try it as stated in other mails using the 2.6.9 kernel.
It has the patches from acpi.sourceforge.net in the kernel (at least
they have most of their stuff like a /proc/acpi/wakeup and so on )
and that helped my Ibm thinkpad R40 to sucessfully suspend and wakeup
using acpi, can only recommend it.

Another thing... if you want to suspend you might be interested in the 
http://swsusp.sourceforge.net 
patches.

They implement software suspend 2 which lets you suspend your whole
memory into the swap partition of your disk. This is imo better then
suspend to ram and also fairly fast. (you don't loose power... you can
keep your notebook of for years and boot then back into your saved
session.... ( yes i'm exaggerating ;) ).

But be careful, i don't know how _experimental_ they are, sorry.
