Check its menus. I played with the 4500 IIRC and there was a menu
option to set it to pptp or memory-stick interface (not sure how the
memory stick interface is called).
One option lets you access it as a usb memory stick device (just the
hardware), and the pptp option lets you access it using gphoto which
gives you some more control, but is a bit more cumbersome.
