This is probably for the archives, but here goes:  I found a computer with a 
real live serial port and still couldn't sync.  The protocol used on the 
serial link was clearly different from what I'm seeing on ttyUSB0, so the 
data is probably not surviving the BELKIN module/Belkin adaptor combination.

Since Kpilot, Jpilot, and pilot-link would not sync over the serial link, I 
have at least one other problem there.

Since I can get a Visor for about US$50, and I know that works, I've decided 
to replace the IIIx and have one fewer reason for booting up the Windows 
partition.
