WirelessModem with Sprint and Treo 600 woes

I am running a Knoppix 3.3 kernel (2.4.24-xfs), with most everything else upgraded to sid/unstable current as of a few weeks ago.

Everything is running really well.

Here's the one exception. I have a Treo 600 with CDMA service from Sprint. Before I got this laptop running Debian, I was running Win2k. On Windows, I used a program called PDAnet, and it worked perfectly every time I used it.

I understand that WirelessModem is supposed to provide the same type of service to Linux users.

I installed the software (and am in my 2-week trial period at the moment). I can connect to the net just fine, but only after I make some hand-tweaks. After running wvdial, I get a valid local and remote IP address, but the netmask is set at 255.255.255.255 (which can't be right, correct?). So, I do an "ifconfig ppp0 255.0.0.0.0", then a "route add default gw XXXX", and then I can see the entire Internet.

So far so good, and I could live with it if that was my only hassle.

Once I connect, if I surf to a large page (specifically, http://www.cnn.com), the page starts to download and get shown, but the images are are just placeholders, while they appear to continue to download in the background. Unfortunately, after about 400k of download occurs, the machine completely freezes (yes, hard reboot time!), and so the link isn't really usable under any stress.

I have a friend who had a similar experience (and might have tried the "##tethered" mode of the Treo 600 as well), but he didn't have time to track it down. This is far from my expertise, so I'm turning to any of you who may own a Treo 600, and use Sprint for wireless service when you can't find a broadband connection wherever you are traveling.

Thanks in advance!
