Try putting:

Section "Monitor"
    [skip]
    Option "UseEdidFreqs" "true"
    Option "IgnoreEDID" "true"
EndSection

in your /etc/X11/XF86Config-4. I was using it since 2.4.xx with various
versions of X and nvidia modules, without any glitch
