Compaq Presario 2100 keyboard Problem

Hi,

After booting the 1st Cd Debian stable 2.4.18 I am able to enter "bf24"
at the boot prompt but the keyboard will no longer respond when the
choosing keyboard screen appears.
It will work with Suse or M$.
What is the work around for this?
