Compaq N620c modem not working

I have problems installing Debian on a laptop Compaq N620c. Everiything is running properly, but I need some help to configure the modem. I am using kernel version 2.4.22.

I have tried running the utility scanModem from http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/ and produced the fallowing output:

The modem Subsystem operates under an AC'97 or MC97 controller
which sends digital signal processing tasks to the digital audio card.
So the digital audio system MUST be functional for the modem to work.

The AC'97 or MC97 Controller is:
    8086:24c6                         82801DB (ICH4) +  .
Many soft modems under this controller are supported by the
 SmartLink slmodem-2.9.4 or slmdm-2.7.10 drivers,
even though an AC'97 modem_codec may not be displayed.

So I installed the slmodem-2.9.1 from http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/packages/smartlink/  (i couldn't find anywhere the 2.9.4 driver). It seems to be installed properly, because there is no message on the  syslog

# modprobe slamr
# lsmod
marmellar:~# lsmod

ppp_generic            18368   0  (autoclean)

But when, I try to set up the modem with "pon", I get the fallowing output on my syslog::

Jan 15 11:03:39 marmellar pppd[6674]: pppd 2.4.1 started by root, uid 0
Jan 15 11:03:39 marmellar pppd[6674]: tcgetattr: No such file or directory(2)
Jan 15 11:03:40 marmellar pppd[6674]: Exit.

I have "googled" this error but I haven't found anything. Do you know what's happenning?
Do you know any how-to or tutorial about installing modems on Linux, so I'm new on this Linux world and I don't know if I am configuring it properly.

Thanks in advance and sorry for my English    ;-)
