ATI 9000: EDID / DDC fails. BIOS issue?

Hi group,

I have an ASUS L5800C and I have some problems with my ATI Radeon
Mobility 9000 and my Samsung LTN150P1-L02 TFT panel. When I start X, the
screen stays black. With an external monitor plugged in (or just 15-pin
connector with some shorted contacts, ;-) I can switch from panel to
external monitor and back and my screen lights up.

Working through my logs, researching things etc. I found out that that I
can't use get-edid from the read-edid package. It says:

get-edid: get-edid version 1.4.1

        Performing real mode VBE call
        Interrupt 0x10 ax=0x4f00 bx=0x0 cx=0x0
        Function supported
        Call successful

        VBE version 200
VBE string at 0x11110 "ATI MOBILITY RADEON 9000"

VBE/DDC service about to be called
        Report DDC capabilities

        Performing real mode VBE call
        Interrupt 0x10 ax=0x4f15 bx=0x0 cx=0x0
        Function supported
        Call successful

Monitor and video card combination does not support DDC1 transfers
Monitor and video card combination does not support DDC2 transfers
0 seconds per 128 byte EDID block transfer
Screen is not blanked during DDC transfer

Reading next EDID block

VBE/DDC service about to be called
        Read EDID

        Performing real mode VBE call
        Interrupt 0x10 ax=0x4f15 bx=0x1 cx=0x0
        Function supported
        Call failed

The EDID data should not be trusted as the VBE call failed
EDID claims 19 more blocks left
EDID blocks left is wrong.
Your EDID is probably invalid.

I'm most worried about the function supported/call failed message, but
also about the 'does not support DDC1/2 transfers'. Also, in my X logs,
I see the following:

(II) RADEON(0): I2C bus "DDC" initialized.
(II) RADEON(0): I2C device "DDC:ddc2" registered at address 0xA0.
(II) RADEON(0): I2C device "DDC:ddc2" removed.

and

(II) RADEON(0): Total number of valid DDC mode(s) found: 0
(II) RADEON(0): Valid mode using on-chip RMX: 1400x1050
(II) RADEON(0): Valid mode using on-chip RMX: 1280x1024

(II) RADEON(0): Valid mode using on-chip RMX: 640x480
(II) RADEON(0): Total number of valid FP mode(s) found: 7

Is it a problem that there are no valid DDC modes found and that the
on-chip RMX (whatever that may be) values are used? What do other users
with an ATI Radeon 9000 get? Could this be my problem? Should I update
my BIOS?

Slightly confused,
David
