Roberto,
	Thanks for the tip.  Reinstalling the kernel (it is a new install) with
version 2.4 cured it.  However, it does seem to still require booting twice to
wake up the port.  An error about USB timeout flashed by.  I'll have to look
at the log next time.  Thanks, again.
