Unfortunately neither of these changes anything.

I haven't tried this yet, but I doubt it will work: The 8139too-module refuses 
to load, if no such card is available. However, the card is not 
activated/available until the cardmgr is running (with the card inserted, of 
course). So really, the module should be loaded by the cardmgr.
