cannot start X after installing msttcorefonts

woody - 2.4.17 custom acpi - gnome2

i had gnome2 running well and good but the fonts were always a bother.
so i read the font-howto and installed microsoft font package (which i
figured out was msttcorefonts). allegedly, this improves rendering in
netscape. 

well forget abt fonts in netscape, after i installed msttcorefonts with
apt-get, debian configurator did some downloading and installing and
configuring after which my X went dead on restart.
