I have not been following your story, so if someone already pointed
this, then I apologize...

In my laptop, tpconfig works, but I don't use it. Instead, I use the
Synaptics input module for XFree86. Maybe you could give it a go.

It lets you define the corners of the trackpad as buttons (e.g. tapping
on the upper-left corner is a middle click), and lets you scroll the
active window by dragging along the left edge, or with the up and down
buttons, if you have them. Is a cute little thing, if you're willing to
forgive its binary-only status.

In order to use it, however, I had to upgrade to XFree86 4.2. That was
painless (there's an apt source in apt-get.org). Then the binary module
has to be downloaded (don't remember from where, but Google should tell
in a split second) and installed along with the X input modules, and a
couple of lines have to be added to XF86Config-4. All of this is
documented, but feel free to ask for my config, if you care about it.

Hope this helps.
