I know neither your notebook nor the Intel drivers. Nevertheless, I run
a HP Omnibook XE3 GF (graphics chipset Intel i830M) with Debian Sarge

You could try to use the XFree86-driver explicitily by uninstalling the
Intel-one? (Since both use "i810" as the Driver this could overlap
somehow?)

I do not have the "VideoRam" section here...

These other resolutions besides "1400x1050" do work?
