is the module loaded?
try "modprobe trident'
one other problem that could be the reason: if you are not
root(hopfully) the user has to be in the audio group

to check:
groups username
if the group audio is not listed, do 'adduser username audio' as root

another thing: for some reason the driver stop working every now and
then after a longer period of playback...i fixed it by switching to
alsa...
