Well, that's not the problem of the nvidia-driver. The reason for that is, 
that you're starting gdm in you default runlevel. And from gdm there is 
no bailing out with <ctrl><alt><backspace>. Issue a /etc/init.d/gdm stop 
at the command-prompt, check your default runlevel and remove S99gdm 
from /etc/rcX.d, where X is your default runlevel and you should be set.
