are you sure that this is _not_ your irda-port? on my machine, i have
also only one tty in my dmesg and this one is the irda-port. just try ttyS0
by issueing the command

irattach /dev/ttyS0 -s

you should see the following in /var/log/messages:

Jul  7 10:20:01 <machine> kernel: IrDA: Registered device irda0
Jul  7 10:20:02 <machine> irattach: executing: 'echo <machine> >
/proc/sys/net/irda/devname'
Jul  7 10:20:02 <machine> irattach: executing: 'echo 1 >
/proc/sys/net/irda/discovery'
Jul  7 10:20:02 <machine> irattach: Starting device irda0
