Maybe you need to enable DMA for your drive. This often causes bad dvd 
playback quality even on fast computers.

To enable it, install the hdparm utility, check the current setting with 
'hdparm -d /dev/hdc' and if it is off, enable it with 'hdparm -d1 /dev/hdc'. 
Replace /dev/hdc by what fits your configuration.

Note that: 1) you need to be root and 2) you have to reenable it after each 
reboot.
