I had sound working with Alsa on a 2.4.18 system with an Inspiron (2500, not
nearly the same as yours but with i810 audio).  I never did have sound working
before I installed alsa, and I can't get it to work now with a 2.5 kernel -
though I haven't put much work into it either.
