(vanilla), but I wanted to get some additional opinions since I know I will
need PCMCIA support if I want to install the drivers from CD-ROM (my
preference would be via the Net).

my experience installing on a 600e (really similar, just slightly
thinner and lighter) is that the standard boot-floppies works out just
fine. You *may* have to enter a boot option (floppy=thinkpad), but I
think that that was sorted out around 2.2.14.
Fire it up and see. If it doesn't work for you, try the tecra images, etc.
If the cdrom supports booting, you might try with one of the netinst isos.
