Isn't it just a hotkey on your keyboard to switch to another display ? On my
Thinkpad, it's a Function key plus a number to switch from VGA, LCD or both.
Make sure that you have the proper resolution (and depth) for your VGA
output to be enabled (Thinkpads only work in 16 bits and 1024x768 I think).

As for changing resolution, CTRL ALT + or CTRL ALT - should do the job for
switching between resolutions. Make sure your xf86config has all the
parameters set up.

There will be times when I will use an external monitor with the laptop. 
How do I change Gnome / X11 config to go from 800x600 to 1280x1024?
