In my experience also, the Debian List unsubscribe system has significant problems.  Some months ago I very patiently followed the relevant instructions similar to:
To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-laptop-request@lists.debian.org
with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact listmaster@lists.debian.org
in order to unsubscribe from the debian-user and debian-curiosa lists.  It took five attempts to get unsubscribed from debian-curiosa (including two or three emails to the list master) and several attempts to get unsubscribed from debian-user.  Getting unsubscribed from the latter list was rather important for me because of the unexpectedly huge number of posts to that list.

So, the sad fact is that those two Debian lists were in effect spamming me (for lack of a better word) for a combined month at least, and evidently others are still receiving unwanted Debian List emails despite their faithfully following the instructions for unsubscribing.
