tpctl / thinkpad-modules on ThinkPad 560

I'm trying to get tpctl running on a ThinkPad 560.

Kernel is:

    Linux version 2.4.18-586tsc (herbert@gondolin) (gcc version 2.95.4
    20011002 (Debian prerelease)) #1 Sun Apr 14 10:57:57 EST 2002

I built thinkpad-source against kernel-source-2.4.18, installed, and
copied /lib/modules/2.4.18/thinkpad to /lib/modules/2.4.18-586tpc/

I've got the suggested changes in /etc/modutils/thinkpad, run
update-modules, and depmod -a.

Trying to run 'tpctl --ib' (should provide information on the BIOS), I
get the following errors. Additional diagnostic output (modules, dev
files, proc info) follow. Best I can tell I'm configured properly, but
the modules ain't working.

Advice appeciated.

    # tpctl --ib
tpctl: System error message is: No such device
tpctl: Can't open device file /dev/thinkpad with flags O_RDONLY. Exiting.

    # lsmod
