I haven't played with USB based CD/CDRW, but I have a tidbit to add; I
use a PCMCIA/ATAPI based one. At some point I wistfully noted that it'd
be handy to get the USB cable, then I could use it with desktops (well,
modern ones) too. A colleague at the table tsk'tsk'd that PCMCIA is a
faster bus.

Not being a board-level engineer, I'm not actually *sure* he's correct,
but if so, you might consider that in your plans.

By the way, I have a CenDyne. The package came with a pcmcia/atapi cord
and a small paper offer to send away to purchase a USB cord for it. The
fact that the cord can detach makes for easy packing. While it is not
the slimmest CD bay I've seen, it's reliable. However, it does need
wall power.

If you can find one that accepts using only laptop power, note that the
motor and laserr together may drain batteries rather quickly, and see if
it has an optional power adaptor.
