Well, most CDROMs in laptops are ordinary IDE devices.  A few may appear
as SCSI but this is rare.  What sort of "doesn't mount" does it do?  
(error messages, horrible noises, whatever)

Mind you RH 7.1 was famous for bugginess this time around.  7.2 came 
pretty fast on its heels.  If it is merely a kernel problem, Debian
has different kernels, and makes it easy to compile a fresh one; just 
install the kernel-package app.

If it's a hardware problem, I'd think the install would have failed too?
