Compaq Presario 1685 CD-ROM problems

Hello there,

On my Compaq laptop, running woody-stable I am having since a couple of
days the following problem: when I put a CD in the drive's tray, either
a data or a music CD, the disc is not recognized, and I have the
following message in /var/log/messages:

Oct 20 23:02:28 joyce kernel: hdc: packet command error: status=0x51 {
DriveReady SeekComplete Error }
Oct 20 23:02:28 joyce kernel: hdc: packet command error: error=0x50
Oct 20 23:02:28 joyce kernel: ATAPI device hdc:
Oct 20 23:02:28 joyce kernel: Error: Illegal request -- (Sense
key=0x05)
Oct 20 23:02:28 joyce kernel: Command sequence error -- (asc=0x2c,
ascq=0x00)
Oct 20 23:02:28 joyce kernel: The failed "Pause/Resume" packet command
was:
Oct 20 23:02:28 joyce kernel:   "4b 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 "

I am using a 2.4.19 kernel from the official tarball on kernel.org, and
use in addition pcmcia-cs 3.2.1 and alsa-* 0.9.0rc5. I am not using any
experimental features, and have enabled the ALI15X3 in the kernel

What I wonder is if this is a hardware failure, i.e. I'm screwed, or is
this some misconfiguration.

Here is the IDE output from the kernel:

Oct 27 23:01:35 joyce kernel: Uniform Multi-Platform E-IDE driver

I have tried to use lspci to get any PCI information, but I only get:

pcilib: Cannot open /proc/bus/pci/02/00.0
lspci: Unable to read 64 bytes of configuration space.

Anxiously,
