Small screen, BIG IMAGE (X on Compaq 4131T)

Friends -

I'm doing my first Debian install (woody) on a Compaq Armada 4131T laptop.  All goes well until I try X configuration.  The best I have managed to achieve is a small screen image (centered, with about a 3 cm border on all sides) containing a GIGANTIC image - so large that only a very small portion of it is available (e.g., just the graphic KDE in the opening screen as KDE opens).

I have examined some of the 41xxT XF86Config files available on the web, and have tried some of them directly, without success.  I'm currently using the vga driver (it's a cirrus chip, but the cirrus driver is incompatible with this laptop), and specify an image of 800x600 with 8-bit color depth.

Is there something obviously wrong with what I am doing?  (Clearly there is something wrong with it, or I would have beautiful images on the screen).

Thanks in advance from a novice (4th linux install, 1st Debian) needing help,
