Generally speaking, what whould cause my laptop to freeze?

Dell Inspiron 4100.
Just installed debian woody,then upgraded kernel to 2.4.18
Still no Xwindows working but getting close (I get the black/white
checkered screen with the big X in the center but nothi9ng happens -
another story for another time).

Anyone ever have a system lock-up like this? 

If I let it sit and not login soon, it does it.

was in the middle of apt-get update and it did it...almost anytime.
